Behind the Lens: Filming for When Whales Walked: Journeys in Deep Time

Working as a cinematographer for the PBS documentary When Whales Walked: Journeys in Deep Time was an unforgettable experience that brought together my love for wildlife storytelling and conservation. This documentary delves into the evolutionary history of some of Earth's most iconic creatures, including whales, birds, elephants, and crocodiles, unraveling how these species adapted and flourished over millions of years.

The Crocodile Segment: A Journey Through Time

For this production, I had the privilege of capturing aerial, underwater, and terrestrial footage for the crocodile segment. One of the most exhilarating aspects of the shoot was diving into the gin-clear underwater Aven cave system to film scientists uncovering an extraordinary range of fossils. These included the remains of the extinct elephant bird and, most incredibly, the skull of an ancient horned crocodile.

Exploring the submerged caves was both a technical challenge and a privilege. The caves, with their stunning visibility and haunting beauty, were a time capsule from Madagascar’s ancient past. Filming the discovery of the crocodile skull was a highlight—a moment that offered a tangible connection to the prehistoric world and a reminder of how much life has changed and adapted over millions of years.

Returning to a Source of Inspiration: The Sacred Lake of Anivorano

Another deeply meaningful moment of this project was returning to the Sacred Lake of Anivorano in northern Madagascar, a location with a profound connection to my journey as a filmmaker. This lake was featured in one of David Attenborough’s early BBC documentaries, on Zoo Quest . Watching that episode along with other episodes in the series on Madagascar as a young, up-and-coming filmmaker inspired my first journey to Madagascar and ignited my passion for exploring and documenting the natural world.

Standing on the shores of the Sacred Lake, retracing the steps of a broadcasting legend, was both humbling and deeply motivating. Filming here felt like coming full circle in my career, reinforcing my commitment to conservation storytelling.

The lake holds great cultural significance for the local community, who believe its crocodiles are sacred ancestors. This reverence has inadvertently contributed to the species’ protection, demonstrating how traditional beliefs can align with conservation efforts.

A Deeper Message

Crocodiles are living links to the prehistoric world, embodying resilience and adaptability. This theme resonates throughout the documentary, offering a powerful reminder that understanding the past can help us navigate the present and safeguard the future of our planet’s biodiversity.

Being part of this production was an honor, allowing me to combine my technical expertise with my passion for storytelling and conservation. I hope the film inspires audiences to appreciate the interconnectedness of life on Earth and the urgent need to protect its extraordinary diversity.

Behind the Scenes: Filming for Planet Wild

It’s always a privilege to work on projects that aim to make a difference, and the upcoming film I’ve had the honor of filming for Planet Wild is no exception. Planet Wild is a nature protection organization dedicated to restoring our planet’s ecosystems by bringing back endangered species, cleaning up oceans, and rewilding forests. They build a global community of people who care deeply about the planet and want to give back to nature.

The team behind Planet Wild is truly refreshing in their approach to wildlife conservation—focusing not only on the big-picture global issues but also on supporting local grassroots organizations that are often the true drivers of change. This unique blend of local empowerment and conservation focus sets them apart.

The crew on this project was fantastic—professional, passionate, and dedicated to telling the story with authenticity. But it wasn’t just about the crew. The local communities we worked with were incredibly welcoming, and their deep connection to the land and wildlife made the experience even more meaningful. Their involvement is essential, and their stories will resonate when the film finally premieres.

The first time Michel Strogoff saw a great white shark, he was pulling it out of his net. He wasn’t in awe of its power or beauty—he was thinking about survival. Strogoff grew up in Andavadoaka, a remote fishing village on Madagascar’s southwest coast, where the Vezo people rely on the ocean for their livelihood. As a teenager, he left school and became a shark fisherman, killing up to 50 sharks a day to support his family.

But his mindset shifted when his brother introduced him to marine conservation through the NGO Blue Ventures. Learning about the vital role sharks play in the ecosystem, Strogoff turned his skills towards documenting the very industry he once relied on. He helped expose the illegal shark fin trade in Madagascar, going undercover to film secret warehouses and industrial fishing vessels laden with thousands of dead sharks. Eventually, he became a conservation photographer and filmmaker, using his camera to tell the story of Madagascar’s marine life and the threats it faces.

I first met Strogoff through my work as a conservation filmmaker. Photographing him was more than just capturing his image—it was about documenting his extraordinary transformation. From shark hunter to protector, his journey is a testament to the power of knowledge, opportunity and the courage it takes to change. Watching him work, whether filming and photographing a vast industrial fishing operation or swimming alongside whale sharks, you see the intensity of his mission. We share the same obsession: using film and photography to reveal the unseen, and to fight for the ocean’s future.

On assignment for Synchronicity Earth, I had the honour of filming and photographing WildAct’s vital conservation efforts in Vietnam. From combating the devastating impact of wildlife traps to promoting gender equality, WildAct is driving change for both biodiversity and communities.

WildAct’s Community Conservation Teams (CCT) are at the forefront of removing the 12 million traps that are estimated to be set annually in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. These local teams not only protect wildlife but also empower communities to take an active role in conservation.

WildAct also addresses gender inequality, a significant barrier in the conservation sector. Through workshops and resources, they create safer, more inclusive spaces for women working in wildlife conservation, fostering a diverse and empowered new generation of environmental leaders.

Documenting these initiatives highlighted the profound impact of Synchronicity Earth’s support in enabling this vital work. WildAct’s holistic approach is a powerful force for both people and wildlife in Vietnam.

I recently had the pleasure of photographing Jessica Pita, PADI’s first blind scuba diver from South Africa, for an article for The Guardian newspaper . Her journey is a testament to resilience, humor, and the power of embracing the unknown.

Jessica lost her sight at 11 due to optic atrophy, but diving has helped her regain confidence and trust in others. Underwater, she experiences the ocean in ways many overlook—listening to the “sea orchestra” of crackling coral and feeling the subtle movements of marine life around her. With her diving buddy using tactile signals to guide her, Jessica navigates the underwater world with a sense of freedom and calm.

Moments of humor, like when her buddy hummed the Jaws theme to alert her to a passing shark, showcase her lighthearted approach to adventure. Watching her confidently gear up and dive reflects her independence and strength.

Jessica’s story is a powerful reminder that disability doesn’t limit experience—it redefines it. Through her advocacy, she inspires us to embrace inclusivity and to connect deeply with both people and the natural world. It was a privilege to capture her incredible journey.

While filming and photographing the vital conservation efforts of the NGO GreenViet in Vietnam, I was very impressed by their commitment to protecting the critically endangered grey-shanked and red-shanked douc langurs. These stunning primates, known for their vibrant colors, face significant threats from habitat loss and poaching.

I was in Vietnam on assignment for the NGO Synchronicity Earth, documenting GreenViet’s work to highlight their incredible impact. Their dedication to community-based conservation was particularly inspiring, especially their collaboration with local community rangers in Tam My Tay. By empowering these rangers with training and resources, GreenViet not only safeguards these incredible species but also fosters local pride and ownership in protecting their natural heritage. It was a privilege to document their impactful work and witness firsthand the difference they are making for both wildlife and people.

It was an absolute honour to judge the 2024 US International Awards, where the standard of documentaries was nothing short of extraordinary. The incredible quality of storytelling made it almost impossible to separate the entries, reflecting the immense talent and dedication of all the filmmakers involved.

This year, the Grand Award was shared by two profoundly moving films: This Tuesday I’m Going to Die and What If the War Ends Tomorrow . Both are masterfully crafted, telling powerful and emotional stories that leave a lasting impact. They are truly worthy winners, and it was a privilege to witness such exceptional work.

I had an incredible time in Borneo documenting the fantastic work of Taskforce Against Kaiduan Dam (TAKAD) a community movement which is working to protect community rights and biodiversity in Sabah, Malaysia. I was there on assignment for Synchronicity Earth as part of a series of film and photography projects that will highlight the work of some of the partner organisations that they support in Latin America and Asia.

The principal purpose for this trip was to create high quality media that can be used by both TAKAD and Synchronicity Earth to aid in defending the rights of the Dusun community and their customary land against the creation of a mega-dam known as the Ulu Papar/Kaiduan Dam.

I would like to say a special thank you to all the communities who invited me into their homes and made me feel so incredibly welcome.

RESEARCHING A PROJECT INTO WILDLIFE TOURISM IN PRIMATES IN RWANDA

I spent some time recently in Rwanda researching for a project into the pros and cons of wildlife tourism in primates. The topic is a very emotive one and a subject I know well having produced and directed the investigative documentary Eyes of the Orangutan which aired recently on National Geographic. Therefore I was very curious to see how the gorilla trek and visit to the habituated group of golden monkeys compared to what I had witnessed in the orangutan wildlife tourism industry. Along the way I spoke with a range of people involved in this highly lucrative industry to try and better understand the conservation and community positives and negatives of these operations.

ON ASSIGNMENT FOR SYNCHRONICITY EARTH IN BRAZIL

After my trip to Peruvian Andes I moved on to Extreme Atlantic South of Brazil to document the work of Instituto Curicaca . Instituto Curicaca is a non-governmental non-profit organisation that works for the conservation of nature, the appreciation of culture and the promotion of eco-development in Brazil. Together we embarked on an epic 12 day 2500km expedition. We crossed dunes, marshes, swamps, canyons and forests to the Salto do Yucumã and the Uruguay River in Argentina. Along the way we documented many of Instituto Curicaca's key projects including forest restoration, wildlife bridges, protected reserves, conservation of rare amphibians and their habitats and their educational work with young people from indigenous communities.

The principal purpose for this trip was to create high quality media that can be used by both Synchronicity Earth and Instituto Curicaca to help with impact, educational and funding campaigns. In addition to this I helped to mentor Luana and Felix from the NGO in conservation film and photography.

Many thanks to all the team at Curicaca and the local communities for making me so welcome and introducing me to their incredible work.

I had an incredible time in Peru documenting the amazing work of Asociación Pro Fauna Silvestre – Ayacucho. I was there on assignment for Synchronicity Earth for the first of a series of film and photography projects that will highlight the work of some of the partner organisations that they support in Latin America and Asia.

The principal purpose for each of these trips is to create high quality media that can be used by both Synchronicity Earth and each local partner organisation to help with impact, educational and funding campaigns. In addition to this I will be helping to build capacity by having a member/s of each group intern with me so that I can help to train them in conservation film and photography.

The team of volunteers from Pro Fauna were incredibly welcoming and hard working and it was great to learn more about their work primarily around supporting environmental management, Indigenous People’s rights and livelihoods as well as scientific research in the Ayacucho region.

National Geographic is to screen our investigative documentary Eyes of the Orangutan this weekend. We will keep you updated as to which regions and times it will be screened. Eyes of the Orangutan is a Chris Scarffe Film & Photography / Terra Matter Studios production and was a finalist at nature film's equivalent to the Oscars: Jackson Wild.

Our hope is that this documentary will shed light on an industry which sees thousands of animals suffer every single day, all for our entertainment. Your decisions as tourists matter!

MALDIVES WHALE SHARK CODE OF CONDUCT LAUNCHES

The code of conduct for swimming with whale sharks program was launched in the Maldives by the Blue Marine Foundation. This code of conduct film for the Maldives was produced by a collaboration between Chris Scarffe Film & Photography, Pinky Productions, the Maldives Whale Shark Program and the Blue Marine Foundation.

These videos are part of a larger initiative that we have created together called Be Gentle To Giants, which aims to educate tourists and tour operators in best practices when interacting with marine megafauna in hotspots around the globe.

SECURING THE RIGHTS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES

Dynamique des Groupes des Peuples Autochtones (DGPA) is a network of around 45 organisations, including indigenous forest peoples’ groups, working to secure the rights of indigenous peoples, as well as improve recognition of the role that they can play in protecting forests and associated biodiversity. There are thought to be between 600,000 and 2,000,000 indigenous peoples living in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Deep-seated misunderstandings exist about these peoples and how they live which often results in discrimination and even violence. Additionally, ‘development’ policies and projects can separate these peoples from their forest homes and lead to the loss of traditional environmental knowledge. DGPA supports forest peoples to have the freedom to live their lives based on their own way of life and customs, to have access to their traditional territories, and protect and validate their traditional knowledge. DGPA works at all levels to do this, from conflict resolution at the community level through to provincial and national level advocacy to enact and implement policies that protect indigenous peoples and recognise and enhance their role as guardians of the forest.

I filmed and produced this short film about the vital conservation work of Mbou Mon Tour (MMT) and Synchronicity Earth. Mbou Mon Tour is a group of communities working in Mai Ndombe, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), to protect forests and savannah, which are home to bonobos and other small primates, and carry out nature-friendly development activities to alleviate poverty and malnutrition.

In many parts of the DRC, Bonobos are hunted commercially for the bushmeat trade and subsistence. In Nkala and surrounding villages, the Batéké have a longstanding taboo on eating bonobos. They believe that the bonobo was first a human who failed to repay a debt and escaped to the forest to avoid being enslaved. However, as other groups and logging companies have moved into the area, this taboo has become degraded and hunting (as well as agriculture) now threatens bonobos and other wildlife.

In a bid to protect the bonobos and their forest-savanna home, MMT has established an awareness raising programme in local villages to revive the bushmeat taboo; established a network of six community protected forest areas; employed local villagers as bonobo trackers; and developed small-scale development activities.

The Mabuwaya Foundation was originally established purely to protect the Critically Endangered Philippine crocodile but has since developed into an organisation protecting biodiversity and habitats more broadly. Their work includes setting up fish and crocodile sanctuaries in partnership with local communities, who manage and monitor these sanctuaries and assist in restoring wetlands.

This short film I filmed and produced for the foundation and Synchronicity Earth looks into their invaluable work to save these incredible animals.

EYES OF THE ORANGUTAN - A NEW BROADCAST DOCUMENTARY IS TO BE RELEASED SOON IN PARTNERSHIP WITH TERRA MATER FACTUAL STUDIO'S

It’s been quite the journey but today we finally signed the deal! Four years ago along with my good friends and fellow environmental filmmakers Aaron "Bertie" Gekoski , Will Foster-Grundy and Damian Antochewicz and I embarked on an investigation into the often murky world of the Wildlife Tourism industry in orangutans.

Today I’m very proud and excited to share with you the trailer and announce the premier of our new documentary Eyes of the Orangutan in partnership with Terra Mater Factual Studios . The producers of the critically acclaimed environmental documentaries Sea of Shadows and The Ivory Game .

The documentary will first be broadcast on July 7th 2021 on Servus TV in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. For those who aren't able to view it here, we will be having an online screening through our conservation partners BOS Schweiz , Born Free Foundation and Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN) . The date and time will be announced shortly. International broadcasters will follow later this year and the film is being distributed by Off the Fence who were behind the Oscar winning film My Octopus Teacher .

I hope the documentary will be a wake up call for orangutan tourism in the way that Blackfish was for orcas. FILMING IN ANKARAFANTSIKA NATIONAL PARK MADAGASCAR

FILMING LEMURS & A REFORESTATION PROGRAM IN MADAGASCAR

MARCH 2021

I have just returned from Ankarafantsika National park in Madagascar where I had the pleasure of following a family of Coquerel’s Sifaka (Propithecus coquereli) through the forest. We documented all aspects of this lemur family for a new broadcast production. Mornings consisted of stretching, preening, followed by some frantic jumping from tree to tree and then feeding on various leaves and fruits before curling up together for a well deserved siesta. Sadly this idyllic existence is being threatened primarily by the bush meat trade and deforestation. However various groups are working to address these issues. To show some of the solutions to these problems, I also spent days with a local community that are involved in a reforestation program to redress these losses and to create forest corridors for the lemurs.

A big thank you to all the local communities we worked with and to Planet Madagascar, Madagascar National Parks and the staff at ISSM for their assistance in the field.

PET TRADE RELIES ON 'DISPOSABLE' WILD CHAMELEONS FROM MADAGASCAR

I recently produced this mixed media piece for Mongabay, which looks into the impact of the pet trade on wild populations of chameleons in Madagascar. Despite being difficult to keep alive and healthy, chameleons are among the most popular reptiles in the exotic pet trade. Each year hundreds of thousands of these slow-moving reptiles are taken from the wild, both legally and illegally, many of them from threatened species living in the forests of Madagascar. Observers say the international trade in chameleons must be changed to avoid harming wild populations and improve the well-being of animals during transit and captivity. They also point to the need to make the trade fairer and more transparent, so local people can benefit from it.

Fantastic news! Manta rays and whale sharks are to be protected under Mozambique law. In 2015 I produced a documentary called Mother Ocean presented by local conservationist Carlos Macuacua in Portuguese (the national language) and the local dialect of Bitonga which was used to lobby government to protect these incredible animals. So it is fantastic to see that these laws has finally come to fruition. To learn more about this new law you can read this article from Mongabay.

2020 WORLD MANGROVE DAY PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS

In breaking news! I'm really happy to hear that my photo was the runner up in the Mangroves & Landscape category of the 2020 World Mangrove Day Photography Awards. The picture is of the stunning mangroves in Antsahampano in northwest Madagascar, with the island of Nosy Komba in the background. A location that holds a special place in my heart as not only are mangroves one of my favourite environments to film, photograph and spend time in but also because this is where I got to know the love of my life Leah Glass who along with local communities and her incredible colleagues at Blue Ventures does so much good work to conserve them.

I hope that these photography awards highlight the importance of mangroves worldwide and in particular in Madagascar, where my picture was taken and I now call home. Mangroves are rich ecosystems that support the planet and people in unique ways, from storing carbon, to protecting habitats and villages against flooding, and as breeding grounds for fish. Unfortunately, despite their importance, mangrove forests are under severe threat. In Madagascar alone, more than 20% of mangroves have been lost over the last 30 years. In this region of the country a mangrove area equivalent to almost 800 football pitches is being lost every year.

In addition to climate change and sea level rise, there are also local threats. These include overharvesting of wood for fuel and construction, dams and irrigation that reduce the flow of water reaching the forests, and overfishing causing disruption to food chains and fish communities.

I would like to say a special thanks to Leah Glass & Michel "Goff" Strogoff for sharing their in depth knowledge of the area and help in getting in the perfect position to capture the photograph. In addition I would like to say a big thank you to Ruth Leeney of Protect Africa’s Sawfish for commissioning me to film and photograph this vital mangrove system as part of an educational project on sawfish.

Over the last month I have been filming aerials for a new BBC series. Earth's Tropical Islands journeys to three of the most exotic, mysterious and remote islands on planet Earth: Madagascar, Borneo and Hawaii. In three episodes, the series reveals how these isolated and iconic tropical islands harbour remarkable wildlife and human castaways found nowhere else on Earth. Madagascar is the oldest island in the world, Borneo cradles more diversity of life than any other island, and Hawaii is the remotest island chain in the world. In a rapidly changing world, these fragile islands are a vital gauge for the health of our planet.
